Jeff Smith's Bone in 3D!!!

My son had to do a "shadowbox" project for his 2nd grade class based on a "winter themed" book he read. We used to call them "dioramas" in my day, but he chose to do it on Jeff Smith's "Bone," and I think it came out really well. I gave him the idea for how to use construction paper for the background, but the work is all his, and his sculptures look pretty cool, I think.

"Bone" in glorious old-school 3D! Comics in the classroom!

I hope I can gave my kid reading Grant Morrison by age 10.

I assigned something like this for my remedial English class last semester. We read Maus, and my students had to pick a scene and write a descriptive essay on it. One of the building exercises was to make a diorama of their chosen scene to help them "feel" the details and therefore remember to include them in their written description of the scene. In theory, it was a brilliant idea (if I do say so myself). But in practice, most of my college students made diorama's that fail in comparison to your son's :-(

Still, what was really cool was that we displayed them in the small rectangular book shelves in the classroom, in the order that the scenes appear in the book. In effect, we made a 3-D comic! My students didn't care, but I thought it was cool :-)

I really need to put the pictures of that up on my blog...

That is very nice sculpture work for a second grader.

And Ben, those boxes would be cool to see.

I've just figured out how to make slide shows in Blogger, so hopefully, I'll get those up soon.
