Star Trek: The CW Generation

The other day, over at Geoff Klock's blog, I made a comment about the J. J. Abrams Star Trek trailer looking like something from a CW television show, and commenter Andy Bentley pointed me to this:

Pretty funny, no?

I wasn't being snarky when I said they looked like characters from the CW. They really do look more like teen prettyboys (and girls) than Starfleet officers.

Note: I am by no means a Star Trek fan or a Star Trek hater. I'm ambivalent about the whole thing. I'm just sayin'.

Tim, I usually respect your opinion but come on. Are the nerds so used to old William Shatner and Patrick Stewart that they forgot in the original series Shatner's Kirk was, in fact, a young prettyboy? And besides Chris Pine and the girl who plays Uhura, is anyone really that great looking? I can't remember anyone before this trailer ever accusing Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Anton Yelchin or Karl Urban of being overly attractive. I call BS on all the hate.

Chris Pine's look has bothered me--not because he's a pretty boy, but because he's a prissy-looking pretty boy. He reminds me of the Paul character in The Rules of Attraction film... good-looking is one thing, but metrosexual with eye-liner is... just seems odd.

Oh man, now you ruined it for me! Ha, ha. I was excited to see the return of my favorite characters -- with special effects that entailed more than someone shaking the camera.

It is funny to see the clip with the CW music. I think you're right about one thing -- we can't really tell how good or bad it will be from that clip. I doubt it will be a cinematic masterpiece, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a sci fun movie that does justice to the potential of Kirk, Spock and the enterprise!

I'm neither a strong Star Trek fan nor a Star Trek detractor, so I'm going to go into this movie treating it independently of anything else. I like the other Star Trek movies enough to be interested in this, but never to the point where I got sucked into the universe.

That said, how many young actors and actresses out there aren't some degree of attractive? You've got young people, who tend to look good in general (eat it old timers!) and actors and actresses, who tend to look phenomenal in general. Logically speaking, when you combine the two, it shouldn't be all that surprising that you'll find a bunch of pretty people.

But, yeah I thought the video was pretty funny.

I no longer have to comment because R nailed it.
