(Actually, despite liking the title a whole hell of a lot more than you do, I tend to agree with your review. It's not a perfect issue, but I give Benson a lot of leeway and look at these as chapters of a whole, so it doesn't bother me too much.
As for Lockley ... even Moench, who created the multiple personality aspect, didn't do much with differentiating them. They had different jobs and acted a bit differently because of it, but they never had distinct voices. Ironically, Bendis in Ultimate Spider-Man might have done the best job with his personalities for the brief time Moon Knight appeared in that book.)

Aw man, Benson's MK is one of the best Marvel titles out right now.
ReplyDeleteI think the point you're missing is that even though Spector is hiding out as Jake Lockley he's still compelled to do good by helping out in the search for this girl. Benson, unlike Huston, has been very good at balancing the dark side with the noble ends of MK's horrible means.
I haven't read this book in a while, but I've always felt that there are some very interesting aspects of Moon Knight that have never been fully realized. I actually have the idea for a revamp mapped out fairly well. Of course, the best thing would be if Grant Morrison could write it. How good would Moon Knight be as a companion book to Batman (I know, I know - MK's not just a rip-off)? What we need is more of those split personalities. Working together. Somehow.

Moon Knight IS better than Ultimatum, though
I personally feel this is a rather harsh criticism of a good title. And I usually say each to his own, until you start saying "Benson is no this or no that." It comes off almost a little hostile and unprofessional. And it's also very interesting to see, someone who considers themselves to be a writer critiquing other writers.

ReplyDeleteI also like the Moon Knight book right now. And agree with Geniusboy, that is what criticism is. And everyone has different taste, the last poster has to admit that. But it's funny how far up Grant Morrison's ass this guy is! HAHA!

ReplyDeleteActually, now that I think about it, I'm not sure I've ever read a comic featuring Moon Knight in any way except for his BRIEF two-panel appearance in Avengers Vol. 3 #1... I can't say that about many superheroes who have been around equally as long.

I've yet to really piss any readers off (aside from a group of Kick-Ass fans who couldn't spell my last name on some message board), so I may just have to check out this Moon Knight and take my chances.

ReplyDeleteIt's really interesting how defensive Moon Knight fans are, though. I mean, I never understand why anyone is defensive about the comics they like. Does it hide something deeper, like they're ashamed of liking it? I don't care if you don't like Moon Knight, because I do. And you're smart enough to like the original run. Chad, you really need to check it out.
