Moon Knight #27 Review

Recently reviewed by me at CBR: Moon Knight #27, about which I write the following sentences: "It's a step up from the brooding, grotesque mockery that this comic became during the last two years, but this new, sparser, direction isn't as tight or evocative as it needs to be to work. Let me put it this way: 'Moon Knight' #27 wants desperately to be Sam Peckinpah, but it just ends up being Robert Rodriguez."

You know who doesn't like Moon Knight?

Commies, that's who.

Don't be a Commie, Mr. Callahan!!!!

(Actually, despite liking the title a whole hell of a lot more than you do, I tend to agree with your review. It's not a perfect issue, but I give Benson a lot of leeway and look at these as chapters of a whole, so it doesn't bother me too much.

As for Lockley ... even Moench, who created the multiple personality aspect, didn't do much with differentiating them. They had different jobs and acted a bit differently because of it, but they never had distinct voices. Ironically, Bendis in Ultimate Spider-Man might have done the best job with his personalities for the brief time Moon Knight appeared in that book.)

Go back to Cuba, why don't you?!?!?!?

I love Moon Knight!

(Just not this version.)

(Although every time I write a review of it, I know that it will make you 10% sadder.)

Aw man, Benson's MK is one of the best Marvel titles out right now.

I think the point you're missing is that even though Spector is hiding out as Jake Lockley he's still compelled to do good by helping out in the search for this girl. Benson, unlike Huston, has been very good at balancing the dark side with the noble ends of MK's horrible means.

I haven't read this book in a while, but I've always felt that there are some very interesting aspects of Moon Knight that have never been fully realized. I actually have the idea for a revamp mapped out fairly well. Of course, the best thing would be if Grant Morrison could write it. How good would Moon Knight be as a companion book to Batman (I know, I know - MK's not just a rip-off)? What we need is more of those split personalities. Working together. Somehow.

Dan -- I'm not missing that point. It's obvious, but uninteresting. Of course he's going to be compelled to do good. He's a mainstream Marvel superhero.

And, though I realize some people do like this "Moon Knight" series, here's a list of Marvel comics (not including the Icon books) that are far better:

Amazing Spider-Man
Dark Avengers
Ghost Rider
Wolverine
Immortal Iron Fist
Captain Britain
Thor
Captain America
Daredevil
Fantastic Four
Hulk
Incredible Hercules
Ultimate Spider-Man

Moon Knight IS better than Ultimatum, though

I personally feel this is a rather harsh criticism of a good title. And I usually say each to his own, until you start saying "Benson is no this or no that." It comes off almost a little hostile and unprofessional. And it's also very interesting to see, someone who considers themselves to be a writer critiquing other writers.

That's just flat out weak.

No, that's how criticism works.

Those who can do, and those who can't, criticize. You should write a review of your "Teenager" script. I'm sure it'll be glowing,

I also like the Moon Knight book right now. And agree with Geniusboy, that is what criticism is. And everyone has different taste, the last poster has to admit that. But it's funny how far up Grant Morrison's ass this guy is! HAHA!

That is funny!!! HA HA!

What are we laughing about?

... there's a "Moon Knight" comic book? What the fuck is a "Moon Knight"?

Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not sure I've ever read a comic featuring Moon Knight in any way except for his BRIEF two-panel appearance in Avengers Vol. 3 #1... I can't say that about many superheroes who have been around equally as long.

Well if you haven't read the Moench/Sienkiewicz issues then you haven't really lived, my friend!

(But be careful about giving a not-really-negative review of the current series, because the MK fans get really defensive.)

I've yet to really piss any readers off (aside from a group of Kick-Ass fans who couldn't spell my last name on some message board), so I may just have to check out this Moon Knight and take my chances.

Boy, that "If you don't like something, you're not allowed to criticize it unless you've written something" criticism never gets old, does it? What a silly thing to say.

It's really interesting how defensive Moon Knight fans are, though. I mean, I never understand why anyone is defensive about the comics they like. Does it hide something deeper, like they're ashamed of liking it? I don't care if you don't like Moon Knight, because I do. And you're smart enough to like the original run. Chad, you really need to check it out.

Damned Commie. Do you have Fidel on speed dial?
